Nearly half of the hours each day take place at night, under dark conditions. Most outdoor activities generally end when the sun goes down because humans inherently have poor natural night vision without the aid of some kind of artificial light. Most people just accept and deal with this fact simply because they are unaware that affordable night vision equipment is readily available.

Contrary to popular belief, night vision products are available to the general public. Most people are under the false impression that these types of devices can only be obtained by military or law enforcement personnel. Now, it is true that items like special application night vision rifle scopes are only available to these entities, but there are many other devices available for purchase by anyone. In fact the average citizen can purchase and own top military grade equipment like night vision goggles, binoculars, and monoculars. The only limitation is that some higher end products cannot leave the United States.

Despite the fact that night viewing technology has existed for nearly half of a century, the equipment remains underutilized. Generation 1, or Gen 1, technology was actually invented during the Vietnam War era and is still sold today as an inexpensive entry point into the night seeing world. While Gen 1 products offer significantly improved dark condition viewing over naked eye viewing, this improvement pales in comparison to what US Generation 3 technology offers.

Generation 3 devices are considered expensive by some, however the benefits of using such equipment often seem priceless to the user. It all boils down to the ability to see without being seen. This ability offers virtually limitless potential. The advantages include, but are not limited to, improved abilities in wildlife observation, security, surveillance, camping, maritime navigation, search and rescue, astronomy, hunting, and even handling blackout situations.

Among the most common questions about night vision technology, are questions regarding the differences in the three generations. Obviously the price increases from Gen 1 to Gen 2, and from Gen 2 to Gen 3, but so do the benefits. On a scale of 0-100%, zero being unaided human vision and one hundred being comparable with normal daytime viewing abilities, each generation offers its own range of increased night seeing capabilities. Visual abilities for Gen 1 range from 10-20%, Gen 2 from 50-60%, and Gen 3 from 75-85%. Similarly, the operational life increases with each of these generations. Operational life of Gen 1 devices is typically 500-1,000 hours, while Gen 2 offers 2,000 hours, and this figure jumps to 10,000 for Gen 3 products.

Deciding which generation of night vision equipment to choose can be difficult to figure out without expert advice. Variables in this decision break down to personal preference, specific application, and available accessories. For example, some people opt to save money by going with a Gen 1 device, only to be disappointed in its performance. But a user's experience can be greatly improved with magnification and hands free accessories.

A Review of the Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10X40MM M5 Scope

In this article, I have given the results of an in-depth evaluation of the Leupold & Stevens, Mark 4 ER/T 3.5-10X40MM M5 Scope with mil-dot reticle (Part No: 11080). Leupold has been stated as being one of the best optics manufacturers in the world supplying their products to sportsmen, law enforcement, and the military to be proven as rugged and reliable. I've had the experience of using these optics in various activities such as sport shooting, training, and in law enforcement.

I'd first like to state that Leupold sent the scope to me well packaged and it shipped extremely fast. In the box Leupold included the scope, flip-up lens covers, adjustment wrench, all the miscellaneous paperwork and even a nice Leupold vinyl cut logo window sticker.

For the basics, here is the information listed directly from the Leupold website with the features and specifications of the scope:

• The Xtended Twilight Lens System optimizes the transmission of low-light wavelengths, so you see the details of low-light scenes in greater, brighter detail than with any other rifle-scope available.
• Side focus parallax adjustment for fast, easy parallax focusing from 50 yards to infinity, from any shooting position.
• M5 windage and elevation adjustment dials with audible, tactile 1/10-MIL clicks.
• 70-MOA each of windage and elevation adjustment range.
• The reticle is magnified along with the image, so you can estimate range at any magnification setting.
• Available with the Mil Dot, or Tactical Milling Reticle (TMR).
• These reticles provide accuracy of range estimation for hunters and target shooters.
• The 30mm maintube (made from solid 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum) offers incredible strength and allows for the greater range of windage and elevation adjustment.
• Flip-open lens covers are standard issue with the Mark 4 ER/T riflescope.
• Durable, subdued matte black finish.
• Rugged and absolutely waterproof, the ER/T is built to Leupold Mark 4 standards, and can withstand incredible abuse.

In addition, I like to add some information in regards to the Leupold Mark 4 M5 series. These are MIL / MIL scopes. And for me, this is the first MIL / MIL scope I have ever used. All my previous experience with precision and long range shooting has been on MIL / MOA scopes. The adjustments on the M5 series allowed me to break the adjustments into tenths based on the mildot reticle. Therefore, all my MOA data had to be converted to use with the MIL / MIL scope. At first I thought this would be tough doing all the conversions and learning a new system, however, to my surprise it was actually easy. Since I used the standard system for all my data, everything was in yards and inches and the conversion from MOA to MIL involved some simple math. Once I had everything converted correctly and double checked it by practical application, I found the MIL / MIL system easier, more precise, and much faster to use than the MIL / MOA system I had previously used. I don't think I would ever go back to a MIL / MOA scope.

As with the other Leupold products I have used in the past, this one was built to the same quality and standards. The scope itself was easy to manipulate with audible and positive adjustments for the elevation and windage knobs. The variable power selector ring was also easy to adjust and not so stiff that you had to strong arm it like other scopes I have used. This particular scope also used the round mildot reticle system (0.2 MIL dots), and is a first focal plane scope, allowing the reticle to be correct on any power. And lastly it had a parallax focus knob on the left side of the scope used to bring the target to the same focal plane as the mildot reticle, which was very smooth and precise.

So, to start the evaluation I first mounted the Leupold Mark 4 scope on a Remington 700 VSF,.308 caliber rifle, which had been bedded and accurized, to give it a great start for the precision weapon system. For the actual mounting, I used a Leupold Mark 4, 15 MOA slope, one-piece base (Part No: 59235) and a set of Leupold Mark 4, medium height rings (Part No: 61049). I chose the medium height because I prefer to have the scope as low on the weapon and as close to the line of bore as possible. I also accessorized the precision weapon system with a Turner Saddlery AWS sling, Harris Bi-pod, Uncle Mike's Military QD Sling Swivels, and an Eagle Industries cheek piece.

Next I hit the range. I started with the initial zeroing of the weapon using Federal Match Grade, 168gr, Sierra Boat-tailed Hollow Point ammunition. It took exactly three rounds to get the P.O.A. (Point of Aim) and P.O.I. (Point of Impact) to "zero" at 100 yards. After the initial zeroing and cleaning, I went through several grouping shots and during the initial testing, used the mil-dot reticle in the scope on the lowest power of 3.5. I found that not only was the M5 adjustments easy to use, they were very precise. The final grouping tests results were as follows:

Seated Bench Position, 100 yards, 3 shots, 3/8" group.
Seated Bench Position, 200 yards, 3 shots, 5/8" group
Seated Bench Position, 300 yards, 3 shots, 1" group

And lastly, using 18" X 24" white poster board and 6" colored balloons, I setup targets at 200 and 300 yards. I had another person randomly change my windage and elevation adjustments to throw off my zero and shot to test the MIL / MIL holds. I found this to be the most efficient part of the whole system, as it allowed me to make a very quick "hold" adjustment to my first missed shot, for a hit on the follow up shot. If the shot is a miss and you can see, or saw, the P.O.I., you simply measure the number of MILs in 1/10th increments for elevation and windage and hold your P.O.A. for the correction. Using this system, I was able to make follow up shots in less than five seconds for a positive hit on the balloons.

Overall, I give the new Leupold Mark 4 ER/T 3.5-10X40MM M5 MIL / MIL scope a 10 out of 10 rating for quality and performance. If you're in the market for a new scope, whether it be for tactical use, precision sport shooting, or hunting, I would not hesitate in purchasing one of these Leupold Optics.

Early in 2008, I was able to procure 4 Nightforce Scopes for Testing and analysis and to be used in our Practical Shooting Academy. Nightforce has purchased a substantial reputation for scopes that are built to square up to the sort of abuse that everyday use in coarse conditions can throw at them. What is digiscoping?

Digiscoping is a form of photography that involves using a compact digital camera in conjunction with a telescope or spotting scope. Using some basic equipment, amateur photographers can get incredible shots of nature and other things that rival professional photographs! All it takes to get unique, crystal-clear close ups is a bit of patience and a lot of practice! It may sound time consuming, but when you get to load these awesome shots onto your computer and share them with friends, it will be well worth the effort.

What do you need to start?

The only thing you really need to start is a digital camera and a spotting scope. Other equipment that may be worth purchasing includes an adapter and tripod. An adaptor helps to keep the camera steady and prevents blurring. A tripod allows you to keep a camera in the same position for a long length of time without tiring your arms. When you first start digiscoping, take many shots of the same things using different settings. When you review your pictures, you will start to see which settings work best in which conditions.The shortest exposure time is the best, because it allows less time for movement and any other factor that could cause for a poor picture. When you have magnified an image dozens of times or more, any little factor is going to show up that much more.

When digiscoping, remember: all movement is bad. In fact, even touching the camera may provide too much movement. If your camera has a self-timer, you may consider using it to time a picture several seconds after you've stepped away.

Practice, practice, practice

As with any worthwhile hobby, digiscoping takes practice. Burris Rifle Scopes - Quality and Purpose

Should Bow Hunters Or Rifle Hunters Be Allowed To Hunt During The Elk Rut?

I saw this topic very lively debate among the athletes who live in the West. Here we have the majority of Americans Raiser moose, of course, some emotions. So who is who is right and wrong?

I had the opportunity to hunt elk with a rifle during the track. My father and I killed a bull moose at the end nice 5X6. When we fly in the teeth when he was 10 years ET A bull. We took over the history of the prize last year. We hunted this area for more SamiOf 10 years. So it was great, a bull, some have beens' when we started collecting this hunt area. Who knows how many times have we seen over the years.

Bow hunters do not talk, it is right to hunt for hunters with rifles at the roadway. While the debate shotgun, it is not fair to welcome bow hunters can hunt the road and for a whole month (at least in Utah). Writing about this issue and has seen many athletes debateabout over the years as my point of view of both parties.

Archery in many aspects of how tough shotgun. You have to get off much closer to the moose, sometimes within a step away. Do you need an arc throughout the year (and you should be) the practice, so you know the gun inside and out. And so you know what you can not shoot distances gold. However, during the hunting bow, it tends to be much more than a game rifle hunters to see. And a lot lesshunters depending on the state that you live in.

Rifle hunters do have one disadvantage when it comes to hunting during the rut. Usually there are a lot more hunters in the field than the bow hunt and this tends to spook the elk, or you end up sharing the same honey hole with another hunter. Other than that rifle hunting during the rut is one of the best times to be out hunting.

So who should be allowed to hunt elk during the rut? I say both of them. Here in Utah, bow hunters get at least a week and sometimes two weeks to hunt elk during the rut. Of course depending on the weather. Sometimes when it's too hot the rut doesn't start until later. Almost when the bow hunt is finished. Rifle hunters get about a week to hunt elk and it's usually prime time to hunt them.

Bow hunters argue that they don't get enough time to hunt during the rut. I can see that and agree in some ways. So what's the solution? I don't know if there will ever be a solution. Rifle hunters of course want to hunt during the rut and so do bow hunters. It would be nice if an agreement could be made that would please both sides. I've also heard bow hunters say that the time they get to hunt elk in Utah which is one month is plenty of time to harvest an elk. So it's hard to figure out who to please, or who the minority truly is.

I will say this though that rifle hunting elk during their rut is one of the funnest hunts I've ever been on in my life.

Whether you bow hunt or rifle hunt we are all part of a brotherhood, all on the same side and all hunters.
